Close your eyes.
Now imagine if America became an unsafe country to live in. You were being persecuted in warfare and political unrest. So an organization like World Relief moved you to safety in a country known as the ‘land of the free’.

For 8 months, your housing, insurance and food are all paid. Everything seems to be given to you for free, maybe even your furniture and clothes. Then the 8 months end and the job you were hoping to find is nowhere to be found because the country is actually in a recession. And if you did find a job it may be in a factory working 60+ hours a week. A job any better than that is basically unrealistic because you don’t really speak the language. The locals treat you like you should have never come over here. All the opportunities you heard about are just dreams. It is definitely a good thing that the organization brought you away from war and destruction. At the same time your expectations were a bit shattered.

Sounds great right?

This is the reality of a major part in Clarkston, GA. They have the second largest refugee population in the nation. They are definitely content with no Internet, expensive cars or maybe even cable but their hope that there is something more than a factory job or high school education is slim. This is not the reality of all the families in this area but it is still exsists.

It has been eye opening. I have been one of the “locals” who got frustrated with foreigners in my country. As if I was entitled to only love Americans. I have noticed how it is easy for me to be in a foreign country and love my heart out. Yet I come home and judge those of these same cultures.

God is beginning to break my skewed views of life and culture. My lens of love and beauty are being morphed into the way God sees it. I pray, let my heart be a reflection of His heart.

My team and I are here all summer to bring light, hope and the knowledge of Christ to this area. Pray that we are the hands and feet of Jesus in such away that they may desire the hope of Christ.

Our group from Week 1. They were awesome!
